NSW Government extends moratorium for covid impacted tenants

The NSW government has announced that the support measures put in place for COVID impacted tenants will be extended for another 6 months (until 15 March 2021).  The initial support measures included a 60 day moratorium on evictions for those tenants impacted by covid (which ended on June 13).

The measures announced required that landlords negotiate with tenants that could provide evidence that their household net income had decreased by 25% or more, prior to seeking a forced end to a tenancy.

The NSW government also specified that the existing leases still stood, suggesting that the negotiating could be by way of a revised rent payment schedule.  Other changes included limiting the break lease fee for covid impacted tenants to 2 weeks rent as a maximum.

Considering the robust nature of the rental market here in this part of the Northern Beaches, often our advice is that covid impacted tenants will find it to be a better outcome for both themselves and their landlord that they move to a rental property that is more appropriate for their revised budget as soon as possible.
